In order to promote manufacturing innovation, Samsung Heavy Industry is using digital transformation technology to accelerate the conversion to intelligent shipyard.
Samsung Heavy Industries announced on February 2 that it would develop and formally apply the data-based integrated monitoring system "SYARD", which can be confirmed and controlled at a glance, for the first time in the industry, and all the information generated in the whole process of ship construction from budget formulation to product delivery.
"SYARD" is a business management system based on the Business Intelligence (BI) platform. It can make use of the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI) technology and other technologies to make big data of the existing large amount of fixed and non-fixed data of individual management, visualize the information of connection and analysis, and present it in real time.
Through the application of "SYARD", shipyards can make the best decisions based on data, which can not only effectively manage human resources, materials, energy and other operating resources, shorten the production cycle, but also grasp and eliminate risk factors in advance.
It is reported that in order to use the digital transformation technology to transform the shipbuilding industry from a representative labor-intensive industry to a platform-based efficient and technology-intensive industry in the rapidly changing business environment such as the 4th industrial revolution and insufficient manpower, Samsung Heavy Industry has developed and implemented the design, procurement Digital transformation strategy of "Smart Samsung Heavy Industries", which uses digital technology to promote business innovation in the whole process of shipbuilding such as production.
Through this strategy, Samsung Heavy Industries plans to reduce costs through the optimization of the whole process of shipbuilding based on information and communication technology (ICT) and the Internet of Things (IoT) technology, systematically promote the three major digital innovation topics of intelligent production, intelligent design and intelligent work, and promote intelligence in the production, design, business and other fields to achieve business innovation.
In July 2020, Samsung Heavy Industry signed an agreement with the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) to build a "3D model-based ship design certification process", which is based on the existing 2D paperless digital form of the 3D model, to build a new process that can carry out design verification and certification business, and to start the real ship application on the LNG ship constructed by Samsung Heavy Industry in the same year.
In November 2021, Samsung Heavy Industry and Microsoft (MS) Korea signed a strategic cooperation intent agreement (MOU) on the transformation of digital shipyard, which will use Microsoft's cloud computing platform (Azure), artificial intelligence (AI), collaboration solution teams and cutting-edge information and communication technology (ICT) solutions and technical experience such as meta-space technology to collect data and information scattered in various fields into digital virtual space and build a strong cooperation system, So as to improve the efficiency of workflow and accelerate the transformation to high-efficiency and low-cost shipyard.
By the end of last year, Samsung Heavy Industry has developed and applied a remote quality inspection platform based on Metaverse technology, a conversational design chat robot (ChatBot), and a production paperless system using 3D modeling and digital twin technology.
Through various measures, Samsung Heavy Industries plans to achieve the goal of reducing the total shipbuilding cost by 10% this year. In addition, the company also plans to transplant and promote its accumulated intelligent technology to the classification society, cooperative companies (subcontracting enterprises), shipowners and other links of the industrial chain before the end of 2025 to build a complete and comprehensive supply chain intelligent ecosystem.
A relevant person from Samsung Heavy Industry said: "The development and application of 'SYARD' has laid the foundation for transforming the shipbuilding industry into a platform business using big data. In the future, the company will also use the differentiated digital transformation technology to continue to complete the construction of intelligent shipyards."
