After the "first" order in May last year, Japan Ocean Network Shipping (ONE) ordered another 10 new Panamax container ships to continue to expand the fleet with the goal of about 150000 TEU per year.
On March 15, ONE announced that it would order 10 13700TEU container ships, and the new ships were scheduled to be delivered from 2025 to 2026. The 10 new ships will be designed with ammonia and methanol fuel reserves, as well as equipped with a "bow cover" device that can reduce wind resistance. In addition, ONE has begun to discuss with shipyards and equipment manufacturers to install on-board carbon capture and storage equipment at the time of delivery.
Although ONE did not disclose the specific ship price and shipyard information, it was reported that the order was received by Nihon Shipyard, a joint venture of Toji Shipbuilding and Japan Shipbuilding Union (JMU), with a total investment of about 100 billion - 200 billion yen (about 5.113 billion - 10227 billion yuan).
ONE said that this order was in line with the company's medium-term strategy disclosed in March 2022, and was also another new order after the 10 ships ordered in May last year. By ensuring the stable deployment of the most advanced new container ships, free from the short-term fluctuations of the container market, the company aims to strengthen the competitiveness of its fleet and meet the needs of customers to establish and maintain an efficient and reliable supply chain.
It is understood that ONE disclosed a fleet expansion plan worth 10 billion US dollars in March 2022. It will invest 20 billion US dollars in the 2022-2030 fiscal year, of which up to 10 billion US dollars will be used to order new ships. It is estimated that there will be 150000 TEU of new shipbuilding investment each year. Another 10 billion US dollars will be invested in other fields such as terminals, technology and containers.
In May of the same year, ONE, Hyundai Heavy Industries of Korea and the Japanese shipyard signed five contracts for the construction of 13700TEU container ships. The new ships are expected to be delivered in 2025. At that time, industry insiders speculated that the cost of each new ship was about US $160 million, and the total value of 10 ships was as high as US $1.6 billion (about RMB 11.038 billion).
According to the International Ship Network, this is the first time that ONE, as the ship owner, has ordered ships on its own. Before that, the 38 new container ships of ONE were all chartered ships, including 6 24000TEU, 14 15000TEU, 8 12000TEU and 10 7000TEU container ships. These new ships will be delivered and operated continuously from 2020 to 2024.
According to ONE's plan, the new ships ordered by the company will be able to use hydrogen, ammonia or methanol as fuel in the future, and the introduction of alternative fuels will be realized before 2030.
ONE said that for the company, green strategy is the top priority of the management. The goal of ONE is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70% by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050. The company promises to continue to make necessary investments in green assets and technologies, and as a leader in decarbonization of the shipping industry, it will carry out extensive cooperation with industry stakeholders to achieve decarbonization of maritime transport.
It is understood that ONE, founded in 2017, is a container ship business company jointly established by the Japanese merchant ship Mitsui, Kawasaki Steamship and Japan Post. At present, the shareholding ratio of the three companies is 31%, 31% and 38% respectively.
According to the data of Alphaliner, the current fleet size of ONE is 204 about 1526600 TEU, including 90 self-owned ships and 114 chartered ships, ranking seventh in the world. In addition, ONE also has 31 new ships under construction, totaling 4339300 TEU, with orders in hand accounting for 28.4% of the existing fleet. With this 137000TEU, its total transport capacity will exceed 2 million tons for the first time.
